Dr Ashok Gunawardene leads Northern Surgical Care, bringing specialist expertise in upper gastrointestinal conditions and gastrointestinal endoscopy. With clinical experience in the United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Australia, he is committed to providing care that is both safe and easy to understand, helping patients feel supported every step of the way. The doctor specializes in obesity surgery and the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal conditions, including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), peptic ulcer disease, gallstones, inguinal and umbilical hernias, colorectal polyps, and causes of rectal bleeding. His areas of expertise include laparoscopic weight loss surgery, gallstone treatment, and minimally invasive hernia repair. Dr Gunawardene is also GESA-accredited in upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy. Northern Surgical Care works closely with Liora Health to provide a team-based approach, giving patients access to dietitians, psychologists, and ongoing follow-up.
